🎲 Kismet

The Colorful Cousin of Yahtzee

🧩 Overview

Kismet is a fascinating twist on the traditional five-dice game — familiar like Yahtzee, but with a colorful new layer of strategy.
Each die has colored pips, and those colors play a vital role in scoring combinations and bonuses.

Invented in the 1960s, Kismet (a word meaning “fate”) adds depth and variation to the classic format. It rewards smart choices, calculated risks, and sometimes… pure luck.

👥 Number of Players

  • 1 to 6 players.
  • Best enjoyed with 2–4 for a competitive yet friendly match.

🎯 Goal of the Game

The goal is to achieve the highest total score after filling all categories on your Kismet score sheet.
While many combinations resemble Yahtzee, Kismet introduces unique scoring bonuses based on dice color patterns â€” making each roll more intriguing.

🧮 Gameplay & Structure

Each player takes turns rolling five colored dice.
You may roll up to three times per turn, setting aside any dice you wish after each roll.

After your final roll, you must record a score in one of the available categories — each can be used only once.

The Twist: Colors Matter

Unlike in Yahtzee, Kismet dice show three colors â€” typically:

  • Two dice in one color (e.g., red)
  • Two in another (e.g., green)
  • One in a third (e.g., black)

Certain combinations earn extra points when they include matching colors (a true Kismet bonus).

  • Save color-dependent categories until mid or late game, when dice combinations become more predictable.
  • Use your Chance category strategically — don’t waste it too early.
  • Remember: color combinations can dramatically change your scoring options!

đź•’ Game Length

Kismet takes around 25–35 minutes with 2–3 players.
It’s just as fast as Yahtzee but with a more complex decision-making flow.

🧾 Recording the Score

Each player needs a Kismet score sheet to track categories, color bonuses, and totals.
Printable score sheets make gameplay simple and structured.
